You look around the room. The karaoke system gleams in the half dark. It has the look of
how the future was imagined in the nineties. Why not, you think to yourself. You turn on the TV
and scroll through the menu. There are hundreds of choices. You switch on the mic.
In this performance, we gather around a kotatsu, a low heated table that many Japanese
households have during the winter. Covered by a blanket that drapes to the floor, your legs stay
warm as you sit on a cushion. As we settle in with tea and mandarins, I tell you a story which
takes the act of sitting and types of seating in your home as a starting point to look at how we
inhabit our living space. I reflect on the ways in which our surroundings shape our personalities
and vice versa, the use of space determined by necessity and culture.
The story meanders through my grandparents’ house in Japan, the house where I grew
up in Canada, and my homes in Belgium, evoking the textures of each place. Along the way, we
encounter rooms that are lived in and rooms that have been left behind, and I invite you to
remember places from your past and linger.
