In Study of a stumble/The stumble corner, performance artist and modern clown Salomé Mooij practises stumbling and she does it together with her audience. Her aim is to explore the technique and impact of stumbling together. What are the ingredients of a credible stumble? What happens when we place this act in the public realm? What happens to the way we interact if we are just slightly out of beat? What happens if we remain open when things do not turn out as we expect, when our pride is suddenly at stake, when it seems as if we are failing? Dare we allow ourselves to be watched at such moments of ineptitude? For this study during Beyond The Black Box, Salomé will create a stumbling corner, where a range of experiments – planned and unplanned – will happen.
In her work, Salomé is increasingly taking inspiration from the dynamism and intuitive perspective of the clownesque. She has an artistic longing to question the obvious and the uninhibited perspective of the clown is closely aligned with her presence as a performer.
