For this production, choreographer Jérôme Bel didn’t ask actress Jolente de Keersmaeker (tg STAN) to play roles from the theatrical repertoire in the normal way, but rather to interpret modern dance pieces. Jérôme Bel is convinced that certain 21st-century choreographies are just as telling and significant as the most meaningful plays.
The performance of this dance piece therefore takes place at the intersection of dance and theatre, of choreography and language, of movement and words and of the body and the imagination.
As Jolente De Keersmaeker is not a dancer, the formal conventions usual in dance have been jettisoned, allowing the actress to let her imagination speak. Form makes way for meaning, external characteristics for an inward gaze, expression for experience and the spectacle for the happening.
