THIS SPACE IS NOT A PLACE: We live in a time of increasing border controls, erected walls, stagnating migration flows and congested cities. At the same time, technology seems to blur all boundaries – we can be everywhere at once. Living in Amsterdam, spending the winter in Cape Town, the same chain stores, the same coffee shops, the same people almost everywhere. But if everything starts to look the same, where is home? Is home a place, or a movement? And for whom is it on the way, and for whom is it something unattainable?
‘So the passenger accedes to his anonymity only when he has given proof of his identity; when he has countersigned (so to speak) the contract.’ - Marc Augé
In THIS SPACE IS NOT A PLACE, directors Ferenc Balcaen, Aïda Gabriëls and composer-director Mees Vervuurt explore the meaning of “non-places” and the possibility of coming home in a world that seems increasingly borderless, but for many is becoming smaller and more inaccessible. What remains of home when space closes for some and opens for others?
This musical and visual performance takes place on location, with the aim of premiering in 2027/2028. After an initial week of research at LOD Muziektheater, we are continuing our journey at De Brakke Grond.
