Nes 45, Amsterdam. The earliest remaining accounts of this place tell of an area of wetland. ‘Nes’ refers to a spit of land created by siltation. Freshwater from the river Amstel and saltwater from the IJ merged to form brackish water. Rita Hoofwijk invites you to arrive not on time, but too early. Even before the festival opens its doors, she gathers at the entrance of De Brakke Grond on Nesplein for a shared arrival and an exploration of the Nes.
Hoofwijk’s work always departs from a different location or context and attentively explores the possibilities of the spaces that define her artistic approach. The resulting work is bound by place and varies in form and scale, ranging from spatial installations to audio and texts.
Kick off your festival journey together with the artist by entering through an unexpected entrance!
This performance could also be seen at last year’s Beyond the Black Box and is now reimagined in a version specially tailored for this edition of the festival.
