This year, IDFA DocLab revolves around the theme of This Is Not a Simulation. Digital media ranging from VR to AR and from performances to interactive installations, challenge you to think about reality.
What do we take for granted, and what's the connection between authenticity and representation? Does The Truth even exist at all, in times of artificial intelligence, post-truth, and alternate virtual worlds? In other words, how does reality get presented, perceived, and interpreted, and which role does technology play—and you as an individual?
The free DocLab Exhibition at de Brakke Grond and @droog presents a variety of non-fiction narratives to find the right answers—or, arguably more interesting: even more questions and reflections. Then there's the VR Gallery at @droog, where you can watch a range of virtual reality projects. This year's all-new DocLab Playrooms at de Brakke Grond invite you to come and play with new technologies and prototypes. On top of that, during two thematic evenings at ARTIS-Planetarium dubbed DocLab at the Planetarium, you experience special full-dome screenings of selected projects.
DOCLAB - GENERAL INFO
IDFA DocLab is an interdisciplinary platform for interactive and immersive documentary art. Founded in 2007, DocLab pushes the boundaries of how we perceive and engage with non-fiction narratives by blending art, reality, and technologies. Internationally, DocLab is seen as the most significant première platform for interactive documentaries. It fulfills a pioneering role in the turbulent development of digital storytelling, virtual reality, live performance, and artificial intelligence. Just as, more than a century ago, filmmakers discovered how they could use the language of film, DocLab now offers a platform to a new generation of makers through which they can invent their own languages and experiment with new forms of narrative and presentation.
Exhibition & Playrooms
De Brakke Grond is the main location of the DocLab program. Here you play, explore, and experience interactive documentary projects that use VR, AR, AI, games, new media, and performances. Entry is free, but you need to reserve online via idfa.nl/doclab to secure your spot.
New this year are the DocLab Playrooms. That's where makers and the audience meet each other to playtest new projects, formats, and technologies.
