The multidisciplinary film duo Michael Palmieri and Donal Mosher bring their curated audio works to the stage with help from a host of celebrated filmmakers and writers. Though created during during lockdown, with artists contributing from a distance, this program returns us to the communal thrills and comforts of storytelling, music, and performance. In Spectral Transmissions isolation and alienation takes the form of “hungry ghosts”, dreams, and hallucinations. In his own stories, Mosher interweaves the AIDS pandemic with x-ray photography, the coronavirus, and talks about his parents’ respiratory ailments. Archive footage illustrates a 1953 newspaper article about a haunted television set. Poet James Davis links video game ghosts to childhood memories. Writer Dodie Bellamy explores paranoia in gentrified San Francisco. And a frightening ghost story by Steven Sheil about an old tape recorder challenges ideas about memory and technology. With a soundtrack composed by Palmieri and performed live with film, stories, and special guests.

Het multidisciplinaire filmduo Michael Palmieri en Donal Mosher brengen een bloemlezing uit hun audiowerk op het podium samen met een klein leger aan gevierde filmmakers en schrijvers. Al ontstond het programma grotendeels tijdens de lockdown, met diverse kunstenaars die op afstand een bijdrage leverden, op deze avond wordt de terugkeer naar de gemeenschappelijke sensatie en troost van het theater gevierd.
In Spectral Transmissions nemen isolatie en vervreemding de vorm aan van “hungry ghosts”, dromen en hallucinaties. In zijn eigen (beeld)verhalen verweeft Mosher de aidspandemie met röntgenfotografie en het coronavirus, en verhaalt hij over de ademnood van zijn ouders. Archiefbeelden illustreren een krantenartikel uit 1953 over een door een geest bezeten televisietoestel. Dichter James Davis verbindt spoken in videogames aan jeugdherinneringen, schrijver Dodie Bellamy verkent paranoia in gegentrificeerd San Francisco. Een angstaanjagend spookverhaal van Steven Sheil rondom een oude cassetterecorder trotseert denkbeelden over geheugen en technologie. Met een door Palmieri gecomponeerde soundtrack wordt dit alles live uitgevoerd met film, verhalen en speciale gasten.
