Wayward Sanctuaries finissage, New work for PLAKT
artist tour and performance, and poster unveiling on Nesplein
Wayward Sanctuaries concludes with an artist tour and a performance. Discover the exhibition through the eyes of one of the participating artists. The portable house created by Thuy Lê Thi Thu and Jiyoung Chu during the exhibition’s opening will be packed up again in a closing performance. Through FLOOR ROOF, the artists explore how packing and unpacking can become rituals of homemaking in an ever-changing environment, between holding on and letting go.
A new poster by Mekhitar Garabedian will also be installed on Nesplein as part of PLAKT, artlead’s art project presenting a changing selection of works in poster format.
About the exhibition
In Wayward Sanctuaries, fifteen artists explore what it means to create a home today, as war, migration, climate change and social inequality challenge our sense of stability and belonging. Through art, rituals and ancestral knowledge, they seek new forms of community, connection and hope.
Curated by Leana Boven, the exhibition is an initiative of The Constant Now, a network and platform for artists of colour in Belgium. It marks the conclusion of POC POC III, a two-year programme in which the artists worked with mentors to develop their practices and their positions within the art world. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with Kunsthal Mechelen and de Brakke Grond.
PLAKT: Mekhitar Garabedian
Mekhitar Garabedian’s work explores identity through the lens of migration and cultural heritage. Drawing on his Armenian background and his experiences as an immigrant, he plays with the languages, cultures and histories he has encountered, finding poetry in their overlaps. Through references to literature, music, philosophy and visual art, he shows how identity is shaped by memories, traditions and the world around us.
PLAKT is an artlead project that distributes artworks as posters throughout Flanders and Brussels. Professional poster crews decide where and when the works appear, creating unexpected encounters with art. At de Brakke Grond, a different work is displayed each month in Valérian Goalec’s steel wall sculpture on Nesplein.
