Please, Open The Curtains

In season 26-27, NTGent will host a new project by promising Flemish theatre maker Ferenc Balcaen (1997). Balcaen previously impressed audiences with his graduation performance Tristis (2022), a visceral exploration of human metamorphoses inspired by Hieronymus Bosch's painting The Garden of Earthly Delights, and with Scapegoat (2024), in which he uses a broad palette of musical genres and traditions to encounter the inhabitants of Dante's Inferno.

PLEASE, open the curtains, produced by NTGent in coproduction with DESINGEL and Hermes Ensemble, is a theatrical exploration of melancholy. It reflects on social alienation, vulnerability, human connection, and the emotional weight of change and loss. Forgotten figures lose themselves in solitude, wandering through a space that forces them to face their emptiness. The floor, cold as steel, gently trembles beneath their feet. Artificial flowers appear to bloom, but only serve as echoes of something that was once vibrant.

In this performance, inspired by Delia Derbyshire's The Dreams and Bruegel's Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, melancholy is not presented as a weakness, but as a search for connection and solace. It is a confrontation with instability and transience. A plea for beauty and hope.

Volgend seizoen presenteert NTGent een nieuw project van de veelbelovende Vlaamse theatermaker Ferenc Balcaen (1997). Balcaen maakte eerder indruk op het publiek met zijn afstudeervoorstelling Tristis (2022), een viscerale verkenning van menselijke metamorfoses geïnspireerd op het schilderij The Garden of Earthly Delights van Jeroen Bosch, en met Scapegoat (2024), waarin hij een breed palet aan muziekgenres en -tradities gebruikt om de bewoners van Dante's Inferno te ontmoeten.

Please, open the curtains, geproduceerd door NTGent in coproductie met DESINGEL en Hermes Ensemble, is een theatrale verkenning van melancholie. Het reflecteert op sociale vervreemding, kwetsbaarheid, menselijke verbondenheid en het emotionele gewicht van verandering en verlies. Vergeten figuren verliezen zichzelf in eenzaamheid en dwalen door een ruimte die hen dwingt hun leegte onder ogen te zien. De vloer, koud als staal, trilt zachtjes onder hun voeten. Kunstbloemen lijken te bloeien, maar dienen slechts als echo's van iets dat ooit levendig was.

In deze voorstelling, geïnspireerd door Delia Derbyshire's The Dreams en Bruegels Landschap met de val van Icarus, wordt melancholie niet gepresenteerd als een zwakte, maar als een zoektocht naar verbinding en troost. Het is een confrontatie met instabiliteit en vergankelijkheid. Een pleidooi voor schoonheid en hoop.
