Emily Mast is een in Los Angeles gevestigde kunstenaar die werkt op het snijvlak van beeldende kunst, theater en dans. Binnen haar praktijk creëert ze experimentele kaders – zoals rituelen, spel-elementen, partituren en participatieve systemen – die proces, intimiteit en collectief onderzoek vooropstellen. Haar performances ontvouwen zich in realtime als improvisatorische ecosystemen die vraagtekens plaatsen bij macht, consent en de sociale contracten die we erven of bedenken.
Gefascineerd door herhaling en heropvoering, brengt Mast werken opnieuw ten tonele op verschillende locaties en met verschillende casts, waarbij ze herhaling beschouwt als een methode van ontdekking. Voor haar draait kennis niet enkel om het begrijpen maar ook om uitvoering. Ze streeft ernaar om “niet alleen wat we weten, maar ook hoe we het weten” te herschikken, door mogelijke toekomsten te repeteren en omstandigheden te creëren waarin kwetsbaarheid, breuken en nieuwe vormen van samen zijn kunnen ontstaan.
Mast is zowel rigoureus als speels: ze schrijft gebaren uit, regisseert door middel van hypnose en bouwt structuren die het publiek uitnodigen om niet enkel aan te schouwen, maar ook deel te zijn van wat er gebeurt, te interageren en onzekerheid te omarmen. Haar werk bevordert intellectuele, somatische en relationele betrokkenheid, gebaseerd op wederzijdse responsiviteit.
Het werk van Mast is op grote schaal gepresenteerd in de Verenigde Staten en Europa. Recente projecten zijn onder meer IFIF voor Dance First Think Later in Pavillon ADC, Genève (2024); PLAY: A Play (Test Run), Los Angeles (2024); IFIF voor Playground in M Leuven Museum, België (2023); Soup & Tart in MoCA, Los Angeles (2023); en IFIF in Villa Medici, Rome (2022). Emily Mast is a Los Angeles–based artist working at the intersection of visual art, theater, and dance. She creates experimental frameworks—rituals, games, scores, and participatory systems—that prioritize process, intimacy, and collective inquiry. Her performances unfold in real time as improvisational ecosystems that question power, consent, and the social contracts we inherit or invent.
Drawn to repetition and reenactment, Mast restages works across venues and casts, treating iteration as a method of discovery. For her, knowledge is performed as much as understood. She aims to recompose “not just what we know, but how we know it,” rehearsing possible futures and cultivating conditions for vulnerability, rupture, and new forms of togetherness.
Both rigorous and playful, Mast scripts gestures, directs through hypnosis, and builds structures that invite audiences to "with-ness", interact, and embrace uncertainty. Her work fosters intellectual, somatic, and relational engagement, grounded in mutual responsiveness.
Mast’s work has been presented widely in the United States and Europe.
