Our home can have many faces. How do we feel when we are completely alone in the rooms we inhabit? Does the room become a place of calm and shelter, or an arena where conflicting forces and emotions meet?
ROOM is a solo performance that reveals the hidden interplay between structure and chaos. Drawing on parkour and slapstick, performer Matt McCreary develops a physical language all his own. His body enters into a conversation with the furniture, the walls and the unexpected phenomena of the domestic setting on stage. Like a fly on the wall, we observe a day in someone’s life: the rhythms, rituals and emotions of the everyday, and the reactions, reflexes and ways we respond to them.
ROOM is a playful performance for young and old alike. It shows how we can find strength in opening ourselves up without losing ourselves. And how beauty can emerge when we let go of control and surrender to whatever comes our way.
McCreary creates ROOM together with Kasper Vandenberghe: performer, director and founder of MOVEDBYMATTER. Through this company, Vandenberghe explores the boundaries between theatre, movement and circus. Physical performance, risk and theatrical intensity are central to his work. Last year, he appeared at This is not a circus with the successful Mystica, a co-production with Muziektheater Transparant.
