Jef Everaert and Marica Marinoni find themselves constrained by their differences – in how they think, how they see the world. Too different to align, too connected to ignore. What unites them is the Cyr wheel. With two human-sized metal rings, they build a physical journey. They balance the wheel on their bodies, tip it across the floor and send it spinning through the air. They hold it steady, surrender to it and are flung out of it. The wheel is both a fracture line and a meeting point.
Marinoni surrenders to movement: she seeks momentum, the fall, the moment when her body almost takes flight. With a juggler’s precision, Everaert explores how to guide and balance the wheel. Through inventive choreography, they challenge each other, throw each other off balance and seek connection – sometimes tenderly, sometimes with an edge. Through the wheel, they learn to communicate, fall together, rise again to begin anew. Their bodies search for a language without grammar.
What does it mean to be two without merging? Can we coexist without compromise, without fusion, without hierarchy? In Difference offers no answer. It sets these questions in motion.
“Jef Everaert and Marica Marinoni create and perform a brilliant piece that reveals the richness of bringing opposites together.” – La Terrasse
Marica and Jef met in 2018. Sharing the same fascination for research with the wheel, they developed distinct practices of this apparatus. Over the years, they feel bound by the same obsession, which leads them to delve into two very different sides of the same discipline. They feel inspired by their diversity and complementarity of thought, body and culture. In 2022, they met again with the desire to develop a project together in which their research interests around the wheel would have a central place. Thus they initiated their first show as co-writers. With In Difference they were laureates of the European circus label CircusNext in 2025.
