“I design nightclubs the way a gardener tends to plants. I spend time in the clubs I’ve created. I learn from the energy, the people, and how they move through the night. It’s like a conversation: I listen, and the club tells me what to adjust.”
In this performative lecture, artist and scenographer Jozef Wouters takes you through his archive of spaces designed for nightlife. Over the years, he has built various clubs in Brussels’ Decoratelier and at other locations, such as music festivals. “Designing spaces for nightlife constantly challenges my ideas about space. I am interested in the interplay between open and closed, watching and being watched, and how architecture can be part of that. This performance is a way to keep the archive alive and revisit some of the vanished spaces tucked away in my memory.”
