Bismillah

A silent narrative. A reflection on life.

A box. One hundred meters of ribbon. A story that unfolds.

In Bismillah, Layla weaves her story into a collective experience - an intimate, physical, and poetic encounter in the here and now. Intuitively, she chose words that she and other women embroidered onto a one hundred meter long ribbon, creating a tangible biography.

In this performance, Layla invites participants to jointly unroll the ribbon, and with it, the line of life. The result is a multisensory experience of text, movement, sound, and participants - a ritual of encounter that fosters connection.

Layla Önlen (1978) graduated from the Maastricht Academy of Dramatic Arts in 2023. In her work, she translates personal stories into universal, shared experiences. Her deep-rooted fascination with textiles and rituals is reflected in the red ribbon, a recurring element in her practice.

Onderdeel van Festival Beyond the Black Box

Een stille vertelling. 

Een terugblik op het leven. 

Een doos. Honderd meter lint. Een verhaal dat zich uitrolt. 

In Bismillah weeft Layla haar verhaal tot een collectieve ervaring. Een intieme, fysieke  en poëtische beleving in het hier en nu. Intuïtief koos ze woorden die ze samen met  andere vrouwen borduurde op een honderd meter lang lint, als een tastbare biografie. 

In deze performance nodigt Layla je uit om gezamenlijk het lint, en daarmee de  levenslijn, te ontrollen. Het resulteert in een zintuiglijke ervaring van tekst, beweging,  geluid en deelnemers. Een ritueel van ontmoeting, dat uitnodigt tot verbinding. 

Layla Önlen (1978) studeerde in 2023 af aan de Toneelacademie Maastricht. In haar  werk vertaalt ze persoonlijke verhalen naar universele, gedeelde ervaringen. De  diepgewortelde fascinatie voor textiel en rituelen komt tot uiting in het rode lint, een  terugkerend element in haar praktijk.
